In the West, we are especially familiar with the artistic scene of the Iranian diaspora, in the United States, Canada and Europe. In Iran, artistic practices mainly belong to the private sphere, or fall within a so-called underground sphere. Art that is exhibited publicly – published book, concert, exhibition, film, etc. – must in fact be subject to authorization, and therefore possible (and in fact certain) censorship. Some collections are only accessible by appointment, or require special authorization, such as the collection of modern art (Iranian and Western) kept in the basement of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tehran. Galleries, however, are numerous, and many coffee shops exhibit works. An important cultural center dedicated to contemporary arts, Argo Contemporary Art Museum & Cultural Center, opened in 2020, with the ambition of becoming one of the reference places for contemporary creation in the country. If you are interested in the Iranian art scene (private and/or public), we are here to advise you, help you establish contacts, organize visits.
